Overview
Ittri Għal Erika (Letters for Erika) is a feature-length docudrama produced by Mediacoop, based on the true correspondence between Franz, a German Luftwaffe pilot involved in the Siege of Malta, and his girlfriend Erika during the Second World War. Blending archival material, dramatic recreations and contemporary interviews, the film reconstructs a deeply personal story set against one of Malta's most significant historical periods. Through the letters, the documentary offers an intimate perspective on war, exploring love, distance and the human experiences that exist beyond the battlefield.

Creative Approach
Editing a 70-minute documentary (split into two parts), required balancing multiple storytelling formats while maintaining a clear and engaging narrative. The edit weaves together interviews, archival footage, dramatic reconstructions and historical imagery, using each element to support the emotional journey of the letters. Alongside editing, extensive restoration and enhancement work was carried out in post-production, including colour grading, visual effects and the recreation of handwritten correspondence through Photoshop, allowing the historical material to integrate naturally with newly filmed sequences. The result is a cohesive documentary that combines historical authenticity with cinematic storytelling, preserving the intimacy of the original letters while sustaining momentum across a feature-length runtime.
