Room 23

Art Film

Room 23

Overview

Room 23 emerged from four months of creative experimentation across writing, moving image and visual art, using a stream-of-consciousness approach to develop ideas without predetermined outcomes. The result is a surreal short film following two doppelgängers who never meet, confined within a single space where increasingly strange events force them to confront uncertainty, identity and the blurred boundaries between reality and imagination. Drawing inspiration from dream logic and psychological horror, the film embraces ambiguity rather than resolution, inviting viewers to interpret its symbolism through atmosphere, rhythm and visual metaphor.

Creative Approach

As both director and editor, I approached Room 23 as a process of discovery rather than construction. Once the central images began to emerge, the edit became an exercise in finding the emotional and visual momentum between them, prioritising instinct over conventional narrative structure. Inspired by the unsettling dreamlike quality of works such as Alice in Wonderland, the film balances moments of quiet surrealism with increasingly feverish imagery, allowing each sequence to flow naturally into the next. An aged film texture was introduced to evoke the feeling of a forgotten archival print, reinforcing the sense that the viewer has stumbled upon something strange, fragile and difficult to place in time.
