A Drop in the Waterfall
Overview
A Drop in the Waterfall is a historical documentary created in collaboration with the National Archives of Malta as part of the international Treasures in Archives video contest within the European Digital Treasures project. Through the lives of two figures from the 16th and 18th centuries, the film explores the history of Protestantism in Malta and its relationship with wider European values. Archival documents, historical material, cinematic b-roll and imagined reenactments are brought together to transform stories preserved within the archives into an accessible visual narrative.

Editing Approach
The edit centred on bringing archival history to life by weaving together original documents, sourced historical material, contemporary b-roll and imagined reenactments of the figures at the centre of the story. Much of the supporting visual material was independently researched and sourced, requiring careful consideration of both historical relevance and how each image could contribute to the narrative. The reenactments provided a more cinematic layer, allowing the documentary to move beyond the archive itself and give a visual presence to people known primarily through written records. Alongside editing, I assisted with direction during production, giving me a greater involvement in shaping the visual storytelling from filming through to the final cut.
