Static

Overview

Static is a short constructed from unreleased music video footage, reimagined through a new soundtrack and narrative. Told entirely through the perspective of a handheld camera, the film follows the gradual disintegration of a relationship, transforming joyful home movie moments into a quiet portrait of loss. The unseen camera operator remains hidden behind the lens, while recurring imagery of a rose slowly losing its petals mirrors the emotional distance growing between the couple. By reshaping existing material through editing, sound and symbolism, the project creates an entirely new story from familiar images.

Editing Approach

The edit centred on redefining the original footage through rhythm, atmosphere and visual treatment, allowing a completely different narrative to emerge. A new royalty-free soundtrack established the emotional pace, while careful restructuring transformed the material into a gradual portrait of a relationship's decline. In post-production, custom VHS-inspired effects were created in After Effects, including analogue noise, soft halation and subtle colour fringing, giving the film the appearance of an ageing home video. These imperfections reinforce the themes of memory and nostalgia, suggesting that the audience is watching fragments of a past that can no longer be recovered.
